Make the new "smart" highlighting optional.
Make the new "Smart" highlighting optional. Not all users are going to want to highlight the whole word by default. Before, in highlight mode, I could highlight a few symbols in a grid in my PDFs. Now it highlights an entire row because of the way the data is stored in the PDF. This completely ruins the point. The only way to highlight a single character now requires exiting edit mode, selecting the character, then clicking highlight in the menu that pops up...

Hi, thanks for your feedback! we just want to collect some detailed feedback for what exactly is annoying/not working for you? You can still select character by character even if the initial selection is whole word, check this out: http://feedback.xodo.com/knowledgebase/articles/927858-text-selection-highlight! Any feedback is highly appreciated! Thanks!

I am experiencing the exact same issue that Ryan described. It will only highlight the entire word, no matter what you do. Please fix!

I'm having exactly the same problem and it has totally ruined the programme for me. I would really like to be able to turn this off or I won't be able to use Xodo at all.
I use it to highlight cross stitch symbols in a PDF grid, where each symbol is a character in a distinct symbol font. However, there are no spaces as it's a completely full grid. So the selection can't find a word and does the full line of the chart. It is much too slow and fiddly to then drag the edges back. I would spent 90% of my time doing that and only 10% actually stitching.
Before the update, I could drag a stylus across the scattered symbols of a particular type on the page and highlight it. When I was done stitching, I could tap it again and change the colour of the highlighting to let me mark what was done. Then I could move on to the next symbol.
I've uploaded a screenshot to show this: https://www.flickr.com/photos/rocalisa/27851065913/
Please let me be able to do this again. The programme is currently useless to me.

If this is the intended behavior, it is not working with Edit Mode, Highlight ool activated.
If I attempt to highlight just a single character, it will highlight the entire "word". No amount of attempting to go back and perform the trick shown in your link will correct that.
It might be worth noting that this document is a very large chart of symbols using embedded fonts, arranged in a grid 75x90 per page. Each row in the grid is stored in the PDF as a word, typically in side a Tj, with character spacing set such that the characters in the word are broken up and properly placed in the grid. the grid lines themselves are simple lines in the PDF. Most of this should not matter, I assume Xodo is treating the full text inside the Tj as a 'word' and thus it is highlighting that entire line, even when we try to highlight just one character. Emphasis: This is in Edit mode, with the Highlight tool active.
